About DigiCash: What

Company background

Founded in 1990, DigiCash has pioneered development of electronic payment mechanisms for open, closed and network systems that provide security and privacy. DigiCash's technology is based on patented advances in public key cryptography developed by the Company's founder and Chairman, Dr. David Chaum. Throughout its history DigiCash has developed leading edge products and partnered with companies to provide advanced payment systems technology to the market.

DigiCash's first product was a road toll system developed for the Dutch government. It is now being tested in Japan and marketed in other countries. DigiCash has developed a number of other technologies. In each case, DigiCash has worked with leading organizations in the field. For example:

Amtech, the worldwide leader in automatic road toll collection and the sole supplier of microwave tagging for all North American and European rail, is a non-exclusive licensee of DigiCash high-speed digital cash payment technology for road toll applications. DigiCash on its own account took the development of its initial study for the Dutch Ministry of Transportation to the next level by including fabrication of actual chip cards and various readers. Together with Amtech, an interface between DigiCash chip cards and their existing microwave technology was made and a complete system was developed largely by DigiCash. Cooperation is ongoing.

MasterCard has licensed DigiCash technology for a demonstration system implementing the first smart card chip mask technology meeting the latest EMV (Europay, MasterCard, VISA) standard. These advances provide true dynamic public key authentication using the least expensive smart card chip available. DigiCash designed cards that included pre-paid cash replacement functions and loyalty schemes, access control and other applications for MasterCard's credit/debit systems. DigiCash's advances in high security and reliability are integrated into the design. DigiCash developed a complete system including terminals, PIN pads, host computer and all related software. Cooperation is ongoing.

Switzerland-based Crypto AG, the leading international manufacturer and distributor of cryptographic devices, non-exclusively licenses DigiCash encryption technology. For ultra-fast processing of transactions, DigiCash developed a modular family of high-speed encryption boards that is manufactured and marketed by this licensee.

European Commission Project CAFE, founded and chaired by Dr. Chaum, is based on DigiCash technology implemented as a cross-border electronic wallet. This technology works with smart cards and infrared point-of-pay electronic wallets. The project consists of a consortium of firms including Gemplus, France Telecom, and PTT Netherlands. Project CAFE was selected by the European Commission to install a trial card and electronic wallet system in its headquarter buildings in Brussels, which has begun in third quarter 1995.

Other leading organizations that DigiCash has worked with in technology development include VISA International, IBM and Siemens, as well as various European telecoms.
