The Gruppo Armonizzazione Reti Ricerca receives funds by the italian ministry of research (MURST) for a network infrastructure connecting universities and research centers throughout Italy. The costs of network connections is in the order of $ 10,000 a year. This is striking close to the $ 11,000 cost of the NSFNet backbone in the US which has orders of magnitudes larger size and capacity.
